Our History
Acme Safe opened on Fort Street in 1968, under the partnership of Frank Richards and Al Owens. Both had a long career in locksmithing. In 1972, Ian Smale, then 17, joined the company as part-time help on Saturdays, and worked full time through the summer of 1972, learning the trade. Over the next several years, Ian continued to work there on Saturdays and during the summers while he attended college. In 1976, Ian Smale purchased the company from then-owner, Frank Richards, and began to turn Acme Safe into what we know it as today. Over the next few decades, Ian acquired talent and assets throughout Victoria to provide the best possible customer experience. Today, we continue to strive for excellence and believe in honesty, integrity, and quality workmanship.
